Summer Reading Issue!

July 16, 2010

Our featured poet for the July issue is the well-known, award-winning poet Jeff Gundy, who offers six new poems published here for the first time! Scroll down to the bottom of the "Journal" column on the left of our home page to find the poetry feature.

Then check out the creative and critical work in our biggest issue yet--on a best-selling, yet critically overlooked topic: serial fiction by and about Mennonites.

Ever wondered what was really in those Amish romance and mysteries? Or why they've become such a cultural phenomenon? Recent press in the publishing industry reports that "bonnet fiction" is outselling "chick lit," and that serial genre fiction on Amish and Mennonite themes is a growth market on an otherwise dismal publishing scene for fiction. What about Mennonite mysteries? Or science fiction?

In the current issue of the Journal of CMW, edited by Ervin Beck, read excerpts of new work by mystery writer Judy Clemens and science fiction writer Karl Schoeder, as well as lively analyses of mystery and romance fiction by Beth Graybill, Kyle Schlabach and Michelle Thurlow. Also, a valuable guide to further reading is the first-ever bibliography of serial fiction by and about Amish and Mennonites by Ervin Beck published in this issue. Beck's introduction, "In this Issue," offers an overview of the rapidly growing field.

We hope that you'll find much to enjoy here. As always, we hope you'll converse with other readers by responding to the articles and stories via the interactive blog connected to each item (look for the conversation balloon icon in the top right hand corner.)

Now, to read the issue, return to the CMW main page and click on the Journal Issue "Serial Fiction" in the left hand column.
